Blind Beers & Bites

Links to Unseen Bean & Twisted Pine Brewing Co in images above!
Tuesday night, Twisted Pine Brewery put on an event with Gerry Leary from Unseen Bean to try out paired beers and bites--blindfolded!  It was such a fun event and I really think it changed the perspectives of food-beer pairing to those that attended. Gerry roasts coffee in Lafayette and runs the local coffee shop off Pearl Street in Boulder. Twisted Pine uses his coffee for their gold medal winning Big Shot Espresso Stout. It's a delicious beer.
Born blind, Gerry relies on his sense of smell, feeling, and taste to brew his coffee. At the event he expertly guided the blindfolded participants to thinking and talking about what they were tasting; describing  the texture, flavors, and smells of the cheeses selected from The Cheese Course.  Kay Witkiewicz and Justin Tilotta, of Twisted Pine Brewery,  gave more insight about the Twisted Pine brews and why the unique cheeses were chosen for the pairs. They went into the brewing process and why some flavors stand out in their beers when paired with the cheeses. As the last (and my favorite) course, Twisted Pine's Twisted Tiger Weizenbock was paired with Unseen Bean's coffee chocolate bars. A shockingly awesome combination. To the locals, I highly recommend going out and buying both to try for yourself. YUM.
Everyone had the chance to speak freely about what they were experiencing as a group and what their guesses were on what they were tasting. Some had some very lucky guesses on the cheeses, while other times it was really hard to put a finger on what kind of beers they were drinking. Gerry thanked everyone for giving up there one most-relied-on-sense for the night and for experiencing pairing in a new way. I really enjoyed this event and I hope to participate in something like this again!

Frozen Dead Guy Days

3/14/2015

So this will be the second year I have made it up to Nederland for this fun event called Frozen Dead Guy Days. An event that includes a Hearse parade, coffin races, a costume polar plunge, live music, and craft beer does not leave room to disappoint. This quirky little town can get down celebrating a guy preserved on ice!

If you're wondering why the heck there would be an event that almost sounds like it should be on Halloween in the middle of March, I'll give you the short run down (and let me know if I have this wrong. It seems like it's too crazy to be true). 1989, a Norwegian man brought his recently deceased grandfather, Bredo Morstølto, to the US to store him on dry ice in a California cryonics facility. 1993, he and his mother brought Bredo to Nederland, CO to keep him in their backyard shed on dry ice (where he still currently remains!?).  And since 2002, the tiny town (population of 1,446 teeny tiny) becomes a huge weekend long celebration to pay homage to their unique resident.
For more info the on FDGD event, visit their official website here or for more on the frozen Bredo Morstøl, Wikipedia
This year, Kay brewed a collaboration beer with Jeff Green of Very Nice Brewing Company and they tapped the beer during FDGD. A Cherry Saison! It was delicious. They got to talk about on the radio with the guys from Colorado Craft Beer Show AM 760, so that was pretty cool! Hopefully we will hear the whole interview on their website soon.

Twisted Pine Brewing Company also participated in the coffin race for the first time this year, but were paired up with the 5 year reigning champions for the first heat so they didn't make it too far in the competition. My favorite team theme was The Cereal Killers, all dressed as cereal mascots (Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam, Trix Rabbit, Captain Crunch, etc)!

Here are just a few more photos from FDGD, and some friends we ran into.

These last 2 images are candids I took of some free spirited ladies that were sitting next to us. That would be cool if anyone in Boulder/Nederland recognizes them so I could give them a print! It's always a bummer when you don't bring business cards…
